About Kingspan Insulation

Kingspan is a global leader in high-performance insulation products, founded in the 1960s by Eugene Murtagh in Co. Cavan, Ireland. Originally manufacturing wheelbarrows, the company identified an opportunity in insulated composite roof panels and pivoted to become one of the world's most recognised names in rigid insulation and building envelope solutions. In 1989, Kingspan Group floated on the stock exchange for IR£20m, and has continued to grow across the UK, Europe, and beyond.

Today, Kingspan insulation boards are the specification choice for architects, contractors, and self-builders across residential and commercial projects. Their premium PIR insulation range delivers outstanding thermal performance across floors, walls, and roofs — helping buildings meet and exceed current building regulations.

We also stock Kingspan insulation products on our sister site — Insulation4Less. You can also browse our full range of insulation boards or explore aerogel insulation for ultra-slim, high-performance alternatives.

Kingspan Insulation Product Ranges

Kingspan's insulation boards are organised by application. The most popular range is the Kooltherm (K range) — a premium phenolic insulation offering a higher thermal resistance than standard PIR insulation boards, with a lambda value of 0.020 W/mK. Below is a summary of the key product ranges by application:

Floor Insulation

For floor applications, Kingspan recommend the TF70, K103, Styrozone N, and Optim-R insulation boards. These products are designed to deliver excellent thermal performance underfoot while maintaining structural integrity.

Cavity Wall Insulation

For cavity wall applications, Kingspan offer the TW50, K108, and K12 insulation boards — each engineered to fit standard cavity widths and deliver consistent U-values across new build and retrofit projects.

Wall Insulation

For internal and external wall insulation, Kingspan's range includes TW55, K12, K15, K17, K18, Styrozone N, and Optim-R. The K105 board is specifically designed for external wall applications and is suitable for render and plaster finishes.

Roof Insulation

For residential roof applications, Kingspan recommend TP10, K107 Plus, K10, K15, TR26, TR27, TR31, Styrozone N, and Optim-R. These insulation boards are suitable for both warm and cold roof constructions and help achieve the thermal targets required under Part L of the Building Regulations.

Why Choose Kingspan Kooltherm?

The Kingspan Kooltherm range offers superior thermal performance compared to standard PIR insulation, with a lambda value of 0.020 W/mK — approximately 10% better than conventional PIR boards. However, Kooltherm products are typically around 30% more expensive, which means they are not always the most cost-effective choice for standard residential projects.

Where Kooltherm excels is in commercial construction, where space is at a premium. Every millimetre of insulation thickness saved translates directly into usable floor area — making Kooltherm the preferred technical specification for commercial buildings, hospitals, oil rigs, and industrial facilities. It also offers enhanced fire resistance compared to standard PIR insulation boards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kingspan insulation the best?

Kingspan is widely regarded as one of the leading brands in rigid PIR insulation. Their Kooltherm range in particular offers some of the highest thermal performance available, making it the specification choice for architects and engineers on demanding projects. For standard residential use, their K-range PIR boards offer excellent performance at a more accessible price point.

What thickness of Kingspan should I use?

The required thickness depends on the application and the U-value target you need to achieve. For floors, 70–100mm is common. For walls, 50–100mm is typical. For roofs, 100–150mm may be required depending on the construction type. Always refer to the technical data sheet for the specific product and consult a building regulations advisor if unsure.

Is Kingspan better than Celotex?

Both Kingspan and Celotex manufacture high-quality PIR insulation boards with similar thermal performance. Kingspan's Kooltherm range does offer a higher lambda value than standard PIR from either brand. The best choice often comes down to product availability, price, and the specific technical requirements of your project.

Do I need a vapour barrier with Kingspan?

In most applications, Kingspan PIR insulation boards have a foil facing that acts as a vapour control layer. However, the need for an additional vapour barrier depends on the specific construction detail and the position of the insulation within the build-up. Always check the technical guidance for the product you are using.
