What is Cladding?

Cladding is a material applied to the outside of a building to improve energy efficiency and appearance. If you want your outside wall to last for a long time, it's a good idea to clad it with good cladding material. After applying cladding to your house, the entire look is going to have an impact.

In addition to improving thermal efficiency, cladding can protect structural walls from weather, and improve the appearance of a building.

Cladding can be in many different forms. The main two are Composite cladding or synthetic cladding and Wooden Cladding.

Synthetic Cladding

A composite material that is formed by combining materials (plastic, woods, glass, aluminium, vinyl, etc) to create a product that looks like wood, but is more reliable and consistent than timber.

Wood Cladding

The term timber cladding refers to a method of covering buildings or establishments with timber to make them look more attractive. Technically, it is meant to protect the walls against weather conditions and the penetration of air and provide insulation.

Today, manufacturers are able to create panels from different materials including glass, wood, vinyl, aluminium, and even recycled plastic materials.

The options for exterior home decor are limitless and diverse today, with new material innovations coming out every day. One such innovation is composite cladding panels that can be used to create any design imaginable either traditional or modern!

What is Composite Cladding?

A composite wall cladding is a synthetic cladding material that can be used to clad the outside of your house. Wood fiber and plastic are used in the manufacture of such composite cladding material.

Cladding made of composite materials is a synthetic alternative to timber, created by combining materials similar to timber in appearance but more reliable and consistent.

By combining recycled plastics and wood offcuts, composite cladding materials become environmentally sustainable.

Since the cladding is made from a synthetic mix of plastic, wood, and aluminium, the composite type has beautifully crafted designs that come in various shapes; some even appear like brickwork while others could implement complex renderings making them perfect additions to homes all around the world who want something different from what they've seen before.

Composite cladding Boards

A traditional material used for house exterior is timber wall cladding. But it needs regular care and maintenance.

When you want the look of wood, but with all its durability and longevity - there's no better option than WPC boards (wood plastic composite). This low maintenance exterior cladding board is an engineering feat blending together both plastic & Real Wood for one seamless effect that looks just like what we see on our homes today!

Composite clad boards come in a range of styles and colours to suit your build. Cladding systems composed of glass fibre reinforced plastics (GRP) include panels, facade and roof components, fixings, and jointing.

UPVC Cladding Composite boards are high performing, low maintenance, and environmentally friendly cladding materials. As well as protecting the property from wind, rain, and external elements, they also provide a classic wood look.

Is composite better than wood cladding?

Wood cladding only consists of wood or timber. There are two kinds of timber cladding. One is pressure treated and made with chemicals, while the other is a hardwood that does not contain any hazardous substances to its environment or yourself.

Composite cladding is more durable than wood as the timber can start losing strength over long periods of time. Also, wood cladding is chemically treated to increase durability. It will start to absorb moisture and can swell while composite cladding will remain the same for a very long duration.

Composites are made of synthetic materials and clearly more durable than wood clad. This product does not require additional chemical treatment to raise durability.

Hence, fewer chances of rotting or showing splinters. Also, the plastic-based cladding will never warp or swell in harsh conditions. Unlike wood clads, insects or termites cannot destroy classic composite cladding.

As composite cladding comes with many different color choices and styles, they don't need to paint externally and their original color will not fade over time.

Wood cladding will need regular checkups and repair after a certain period, hence proven more costly as compared to deluxe composite cladding which comes in aesthetically pleasing colours and style that require no regular maintenance.

Where can you use composite clad?

The majority of commercial buildings contain cladding in one form or another. As per current building regulations in UK, you can use cladding on your property if it's up to 18m high.

When it comes to designing buildings or adding composite cladding on an existing one, designers should take into account the design detail around windows and doors as well as how water from downpipes will penetrate. They also need a way for excess rainwater to escape so that buildings stay dry!

Before using composite cladding, there must be attention paid to preventing fire spread and keeping things clean and maintained.

What Are The Benefits of Cladding?

In construction, cladding has been used for decades and has a number of benefits.

Given below are the main advantages of using composite cladding and why you should consider one;

  • Decorative design with better protection
  • Protect building from external weather conditions
  • They bring privacy and security to your place of residence
  • Better sound insulation
  • Thermally efficient
  • Create an external facade
  • Can prevent from rapid spread of fire
  • Wide choice of colours for a better appearance
  • Suitable in both new and old construction
  • No need to paint the outer walls
  • It contains no additional chemicals
  • Cladovers used in conservatories

Can Composite Decking be used as Cladding?

Yes. Technically you can use it as composite siding for your external projects. Composite siding is the new design style for exterior wall of a house or commercial building and is built from recycled plastic and wood. Given the same appearance as wood, composite cladding defers when it comes to durability and resistance to insects. They are resistant to mold, fading, and stains without regular maintenance.

Even though composite sidings and decking boards are manufactured with similar qualities, there is a significant difference between them. The major difference is that composite cladding is made with interlocking panels, which makes them a perfect fit to protect external structures. Another major difference is the composite rain screen that composite decking lack. They protect your exterior from rain and moisture getting inside the walls.

Cost to install composite clads in UK

You can add Wall Cladding to your home to transform the way it looks and protect it from external elements and weather. But sure it is going to cost you some money. The cheap cladding will be mostly softwood clad, which is very cost-effective and available in the market for almost half the price compared to other modern high-class premium synthetic clads.

If you are planning to install composite boarding in UK, it will cost you a little more than softwood cladding and nearly the same as hardwood clads. But Composite cladding offers many benefits over and above the cost of installation.

Synthetic cladding like uPVC cladding is way more durable than any other cladding, and it will prevent from moisture entering your property and is a better way of insulating your walls too.

How much you are going to spend will depend on the size and style of your project. For a single-story building, you will need about 600 boards. Depending on the design of the house, you may need more. So, this implies that you will spend between £3500 to £5000 to install composite wall cladding in a single-story building. Hence, in other words, the cost for composite cladding is between £30 to £35 per meter square. You can use a calculator to set the exact numerical value for cladding boards for your wall.

According to the Building Information Model, cladding can cost somewhere between £300 and £600 - based on a two-day job to cover a single wall in a gable roof house.

Installation costs for cladding will vary based on the amount of cladding, the material and product used, the complexity of the installation, number of working days, the experience of specialists, and many other factors.
