Welcome to the Timber category at Build4Less, where we offer a comprehensive range of timber products suitable for a variety of construction and DIY projects. Our selection encompasses everything from marine plywood to treated timber, ensuring you find exactly what you need for your project.
What is Timber?
Timber refers to processed wood that is used for construction and carpentry. It is obtained from trees and prepared by sawing, planing, or pressure-treating, depending on its intended use. Timber is one of the oldest and most versatile building materials, valued for its natural strength, insulation properties, and ease of use.
Explore Our Comprehensive Timber Products Range
1. Treated Timber
Ideal for outdoor applications, our pressure-treated timber is infused with preservatives to resist rot, decay, and insect attacks. Perfect for decking, fencing, and garden structures.
2. Untreated Timber:
For interior projects where natural aesthetics are desired, our untreated timber offers versatility and ease of customisation. Suitable for furniture, shelving, and indoor frameworks.
3. CLS Studwork Timber:
Precision-cut and planed, CLS (Canadian Lumber Standard) timber is the go-to choice for framing and partitioning. Its smooth finish ensures ease of handling and installation.
4. Carcassing Timber (C16 & C24 Grades):
Our structural carcassing timber is available in both C16 and C24 grades, catering to varying strength requirements. Whether it's for floor joists, roof battens, or wall plates, we have the right timber to support your structure.
5. Sheet Materials:
From OSB boards to plywood and MDF, our timber sheet materials are essential for flooring, roofing, and wall sheathing. They provide stability and a smooth surface for various applications.
What is planned timber?
Planed timber refers to wood that has been smoothed on one or more sides using a planing machine. This process removes rough saw marks and creates a clean, uniform finish, making it ideal for projects where appearance and precision are important. It’s often available as either Planed All Round (PAR) or Planed Square Edge (PSE) timber.
Selecting the Right Timber
Choosing the right timber depends on the purpose, environment, and design requirements of your project. Here’s how to make the best choice:
Environmental Conditions: If your timber will be exposed to the elements, such as in fencing, decking, or outdoor structures, opt for pressure-treated timber that resists moisture, rot, and insects. For high-moisture indoor areas like bathrooms or kitchens, Marine Plywood offers excellent water resistance.
Structural Requirements: For load-bearing applications such as floor joists, wall studs, or roofing, select C16 or C24 structural timber, which is graded for strength and durability. For lightweight, non-structural projects or interior framing, CLS timber provides a smooth, easy-to-handle solution.
Aesthetic Preferences: If the appearance of the timber is important, such as for visible shelving, furniture, or panelling, choose from our range of planed, veneered, or decorative timber products. These options are not only functional but also visually appealing.
Timber continues to be a cornerstone of the construction and joinery world thanks to its unmatched versatility, eco-friendliness, and natural charm. Whether you're tackling a weekend DIY build or managing a full-scale commercial project, the right timber can make all the difference. At Build4Less, you’ll find a carefully selected range of timber products to suit any requirement — all at competitive prices and with reliable UK-wide delivery.
Applications of Timber
Timber is used across a broad range of domestic and commercial construction projects:
- Structural Frameworks: Stud walls, floor joists, and roof battens
- Fencing & Decking: Pressure-treated timber is ideal for external environments
- Interior Finishing: Skirting boards, architraves, and panelling
- Joinery & Furniture: Tables, cabinets, shelving, and staircases
- DIY Projects: Garden sheds, raised beds, or decorative structures
Benefits of using Timber
- Sustainability: A renewable and eco-friendly building material when sourced responsibly
- Versatility: Can be cut, shaped, stained, or painted to suit any application
- Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Offers excellent structural integrity without being too heavy
- Thermal Insulation: Naturally insulates better than metal or concrete
- Cost-Effective: Affordable across a range of construction and decorative uses
Timber vs OSB Board – What’s the Difference?
Timber and OSB (Oriented Strand Board) are both widely used materials in construction, but they serve different purposes and offer distinct advantages. Timber refers to solid wood, available in various grades and finishes, and is typically used for structural applications such as framing, joists, and stud walls. It offers excellent strength, durability, and a natural aesthetic, making it ideal for both visible and load-bearing uses.
On the other hand, OSB is an engineered sheet material made by compressing layers of wood strands with adhesives. It provides a uniform surface and is commonly used for sheathing walls, flooring, and roofing due to its affordability and wide panel sizes. However, OSB lacks the natural grain and appearance of timber, and although it can handle general construction needs, it may not perform as well in high-moisture environments unless sealed.
