How to fit a mortice lock

Installing a mortice lock can seem intimidating, but it’s quite simple. Whether you’re replacing an existing lock or installing one for the first time, this guide will walk you through the process of how to fit a mortice lock in just 6 easy steps. In no time at all, you’ll be able to secure your doors with confidence.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Before beginning, ensure you have everything you need to complete the job. This includes a mortice lock and key ideally ones that match your existing locks as well as a chisel, drill bit, screwdriver, saw blade and hammer. It’s also wise to wear goggles and gloves to protect your eyes and hands while working.

Step 2: Measure Twice

Measure the size of the hole that needs to be cut into the door frame using a ruler or measuring tape. Once you have determined the size of the hole, mark it lightly with a pencil or pen so that you know exactly where it needs to go. Make sure it is level.

Step 3: Cut Carefully

Using a saw blade or chisel, carefully cut out the marked area on the door frame until it matches up with your measurements from step 2. Be sure not to cut too deep otherwise, you may damage more than just the door frame!

You can use sandpaper or a file to smooth out any rough edges around your newly-cut hole once finished cutting.

Step 4: Insert Mortice Lock

Fitting a  mortice lock into place within the hole in your door frame until it fits snugly inside. Once inserted, use screws around its edges to secure it in place tightly so that it won't move when someone attempts to open or close the door later on down the line.   This is also a good time to ensure that all of your locks match if they don't match perfectly now then they certainly won't after being installed! If needed readjustments must be made at this point do them before securing with screws completely.    Remember those safety glasses? Now is the time for them especially if any drilling is necessary for installation purposes!

Step 5: Test Out Your Lock

After ensuring that everything looks good and all screws are tightened securely, insert your key into the mortice lock and turn it clockwise until you hear a “click” sound indicating that it has been locked correctly. Then try unlocking and locking again several times just to confirm everything works properly before moving

Step 6: Enjoy Your New Mortice Lock

You should now have successfully installed your new mortice lock without any issues! Congratulations enjoy knowing in advance what visitors will be knocking at your door during their next visit.
