Collection: Plywood

Plywood is an excellent insulation, backing, and strengthening product ideal for any use ranging from construction and insulation of roofs all the way to boat building. Our selection of plywood includes everyday use hardwood and softwood makes as well as speciality plywood such as Marine Plywood for extra strength and water control in construction and other everyday uses.

Working with plywood can come in many forms, high quality Marine Plywood is made from softwood which gives it excellent density, strength, and layering capabilities. This plywood can deal with high levels of moisture and is recommended not just in industrial but also in boating communities. Larger projects require stronger wood - we recommend Hardwood Structural Plywood. Although less prone to bending and twisting, it gives structural integrity and is able to withstand internal and external plywood uses.

For roofing and insulation projects with plywood, you will find the PIR-plywood laminate an excellent addition. Available in packs, these plywood insulation boards have a PIR foam centre to provide insulation when working on roof decks. For easy ceiling applications, take a look at the Plywood Pattress boards, made with suspended ceilings and spotlights in mind.

All of our plywood comes in various sizes as well as a number of thicknesses, if you have a specific need in mind please contact one of our team members and we will talk you through your options and how we can help - call us 020 3481 1978 or speak to us on Live Chat

All our plywood panels are manufactured from cross-laminated wood veneer, bonded under pressure to deliver exceptional strength, dimensional stability and resistance to warping. Browse our full selection of hardwood plywood, softwood plywood, birch plywood, marine plywood and fire-retardant grades below.

A typical plywood panel features face veneers of a higher grade than the core veneers. The main function of the core layers is to increase the separation between the outer layers, where bending stresses are greatest, thereby enhancing plywood's resistance to bending. Consequently, thicker panels can span longer distances under the same loads. In bending, the maximum stress occurs in the outermost layers, with one in tension and the other in compression. Bending stress diminishes from its peak at the face layers to nearly zero at the central layer. In contrast, shear stress is higher in the centre of the panel and at the outer fibres.

Plywood is a material made from thin layers or plies of wood veneer glued together. It is also known as ply or plyboard and is extensively used in construction. Ply sheets are manufactured in three or more thin layers, depending on the thickness and requirements.

What are the 3 main types of plywood?

The number and type of plies a board has can greatly affect its strength or lightness, impacting your project. Depending on your needs and the required strength, some may need thicker boards while others can opt for thinner ones. Each layer or veneer is glued to another, allowing you to create as many plies as necessary. The final thickness of the board may vary depending on where you buy it, even if both have the same number of plies. Consequently, plies can be classified into three main categories:

Three-ply

It has three layers and is the most commonly used type of ply. It is strong and durable. Due to its finish, it appears more decorative than other types of plywood.

Five-ply

It consists of five veneer layers. It is stronger than three-ply and is mostly suitable for interior projects.

Multi-ply

It is made of multiple layers, making this type of ply the strongest. It is mainly used in external projects where strength is a priority, such as in roofing.

Types of Plywood Sheets

Structural Plywood

Designed for load-bearing applications including structural framing, roofing, flooring and concrete shuttering. Structural plywood sheathing is graded for permanent use in construction and meets the demands of both residential and commercial builds. Available in 6mm, 12mm and 18mm thicknesses.

Marine Plywood (BS1088)

Far Eastern BS1088 marine plywood is manufactured from durable face and core veneers, engineered wood layers bonded to resist delamination, fungal attack and moisture penetration. The preferred choice for boat building, wet rooms and outdoor structures where water resistance is critical.

Exterior Hardwood Plywood

Made from hardwood veneers bonded with WBP (Weather and Boil Proof) adhesive, exterior hardwood plywood is strong, weather-resistant and suitable for cladding, wall sheathing and general outdoor use. Available in 9mm, 12mm and 18mm.

Fire Retardant Plywood (Euro Class B)

Treated to meet Euro Class B fire safety certifications, this grade is commonly specified in commercial buildings, schools and public spaces. FSC® certified, trade-quality plywood sheets available in 9mm, 12mm, 18mm and 25mm.

Shuttering Plywood

A smooth-faced, sanded plywood used for concrete formwork and temporary site structures. Cost-effective and reliable for shuttering applications on construction sites.

Birch Plywood

Manufactured from thin birch veneers in alternating directions, birch plywood offers a fine, consistent finish with excellent strength. Ideal for furniture, cabinetry and interior joinery where a quality surface is required.

How is plywood manufactured?

In the early 1800s, ply was a simple material made by glueing thin sheets of wood together. However, with innovations like steam-powered machines capable of cutting veneers cheaply and easily, particularly those developed for factory use, where large quantities were needed to produce items quickly, the technology behind this handy DIY project changed permanently! Nowadays, there is more than one type available on the market; some even come pre-assembled, so all you need to do is add your own screws or nails as desired.

Plywood Thickness Guide

Our plywood sheets are available in the following thicknesses to suit a wide variety of applications:

  • 6mm — lightweight panels, backing boards and small-scale projects
  • 9mm — general joinery, furniture making and wall lining
  • 12mm — flooring, roofing and structural applications
  • 18mm — heavy-duty flooring, shuttering and structural builds
  • 25mm — maximum strength marine and structural applications

Standard sheet size is 2440mm x 1220mm (8x4).

Plywood Grades Explained

Plywood grades determine the quality of the face veneer and core construction. Higher grades such as A and B offer a smooth, knot-free surface suitable for visible joinery and furniture. Lower grades (C and D) are used in structural and hidden applications where appearance is less important. Our range includes certified grades suitable for both interior and exterior use.

Specialist types available include pine plywood, meranti plywood, mahogany plywood, walnut plywood, cherry plywood and sanded plywood — contact us if you need a specific grade or species not listed.

Key Properties

  • High Strength — Cross-laminated veneer construction distributes stress evenly, preventing splitting and increasing load capacity
  • Moisture Resistance — WBP-bonded grades withstand humidity and wet conditions for exterior and marine use
  • Fire Resistance — Euro Class B certified grades meet fire safety regulations for commercial environments
  • Dimensional Stability — Resists warping, twisting and shrinkage better than solid timber
  • Versatility — Suitable for flooring, panelling, wall sheathing, roofing, furniture and joinery
  • Insulation - The high quality of thermal and acoustic insulation provided by ply sheet makes it suitable for roofs, walls, ceilings, and floors. An extra layer of insulation can be used for better insulation.

Common Uses of Plywood

  • Flooring — Used in roof decking and subfloors for internal flooring and flooring panelling projects.
  • Furniture & Joinery — Ideal for custom-built wardrobes, shelving, bookcases, tables, doors and cabinetry.
  • Interior Walls — Suitable for wood panelling and structural framing of interior stud walls, improving thermal performance behind plasterboard.
  • External Wall Sheathing — Higher-grade exterior plywood serves as protective sheathing, keeping frame structures intact and square.
  • Structural Systems — Used in construction projects where strength, durability and structural framing are priorities.
  • Suspended Ceilings — Smooth-surface panels used for decorative ceilings, acrylic finishes and supporting spotlight fittings.
  • Light Doors — Interior plywood panels are used for lightweight flush doors, customisable for interior use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main types of plywood available in the UK?

The most common types are structural plywood, marine plywood, exterior hardwood plywood, fire retardant plywood, birch plywood and shuttering plywood. Specialist grades including pine plywood, meranti plywood and mahogany plywood are also available — contact our team for availability.

What thickness does plywood come in?

UK plywood sheets are available from 3mm up to 25mm. The most common thicknesses are 6mm, 9mm, 12mm, 18mm and 25mm. Standard sheet size is 2440mm x 1220mm (8x4). Thicker boards offer greater strength for structural framing, flooring and roofing applications.

Is plywood better than solid timber for construction?

For most construction applications, yes. Plywood's cross-grained veneer construction gives it a superior strength-to-weight ratio, making it less prone to splitting, shrinking and warping than solid timber. It is the preferred choice of builders and contractors for structural, roofing and flooring projects across the UK.

What is WBP plywood?

WBP stands for Weather and Boil Proof — a standard that describes the water resistance of the adhesive used to bond the veneer layers. WBP-rated plywood is suitable for exterior and marine use where exposure to moisture is expected.
