How to Change a Barrel Lock
Have you ever been locked out of your house or business and needed to quickly change the barrel lock? If so, don’t worry changing a barrel lock is an easy process and can be done in just a few simple steps. Here is a guide that will walk you through everything you need to know about changing a barrel lock.
What is a Barrel Lock?
A barrel lock is an extremely durable type of lock that consists of two cylinders that interface with each other when the key is inserted. The inner cylinder contains the pins which interact with the teeth on the key while the outer cylinder houses springs and pins that interact with the teeth on the inner cylinder when the key turns. This interaction between pins and springs creates a locking mechanism that requires precise alignment to open it.
Advantages of Using Barrel Locks
One of the greatest advantages of using barrel locks is their durability. These locks are designed to be strong enough to withstand attacks from tampering or picking, making them an ideal choice for securing doors, gates, safes, cabinets and more. They can also be used in combination locks as well as padlocks for increased security. Additionally, these locks can be customized with different finishes such as brass, nickel, chrome, copper and stainless steel so they will blend in nicely with any decor.
Preparing for the Lock Change
Before getting started, make sure you have all the necessary tools at hand. You will need a working key, screwdriver, and some WD40. To begin, insert the working key into the lock and turn it clockwise until it clicks into place. This should retract the locking mechanism of the lock making it easier to remove.
Removing the Barrel Lock
Once your key has been inserted correctly and turned into place, use your screwdriver to unscrew any screws on either side of the cylinder (the part containing the keyhole). Once all screws are removed, you can easily pull out the cylinder from its housing this is also referred to as pulling out “the core” of the lock. Be careful when removing this part as it contains delicate pins that could get damaged if not handled properly.
