A Guide to How Deep Should A Fence Post Be

Installing a fence post is an important step in any fencing project. It’s essential to know how deep the post should be placed in order to ensure that it stays upright and secure. Here is your guide to properly installing a fence post. 

How Deep Should My Fence Post Be? 

The general rule of thumb when determining how deep should fence post be buried is two-thirds of the total length of the post should be overground. For example, if you are using a 6-foot-tall post, then 4 feet should be above ground level. This will provide enough stability for your fence and help protect against wind damage. If you are installing a wooden fence, then it is also important to note that posts should never touch the ground, as this can lead to rot and other problems over time. 

Digging Your Post Hole 

Once you have determined how deep to dig fence post hole needs to be, it's time to start digging for fence post depth Depending on the type of soil you are working with, this could take some time and effort. Loose soil can usually be dug out relatively easily but clay or rock may require tools like picks or jackhammers for removal. Concrete Mixing & Pouring 

Mixing concrete can often seem overwhelming but it doesn't have to be difficult! To make sure that your concrete has enough strength and durability for your fencing project, use Portland cement (1 part), and (2 parts), and gravel (3 parts). When mixing by hand, pour water slowly until you reach the desired consistency thick but still spreadable before pouring it into the hole surrounding your fence post. Once poured, add water on top of the mix and use a trowel or stick to smooth out any lumps or bumps in order for it to set properly around your fence post.
