A Comprehensive Guide to Bifold Door Sizes

When it comes to finding the perfect bifold door for your home, you have to consider a lot of factors. Not only do you have to find the right design and style that fits your aesthetic, but you also need to make sure that it is the correct size for your space. To help you in this process, we’ve put together this guide on understanding bifold door sizes! Let’s get started!

Measuring Your Space For Bifold Doors

The first step is finding the right size bi-fold door widths where you plan to install them. There are two main measurements you will need: width and height. When measuring width of bifold doors, make sure that you measure from one end of the opening to the other rather than adding a few extra inches on either side—this will ensure that your bifold door fits correctly. For height, measure from the top of the opening down to the floor or where it meets another surface such as a staircase or hallway wall.  Once you have these measurements, subtract 16” from each measurement. This will give you an idea of what size door can fit in your space without having any issues with clearance.

Understanding Gauges

Another important factor when choosing bifold door dimensions is understanding gauge sizes and what they mean for your project. Gauge refers to how thick the metal frame around each panel is—the thicker it is, the more sturdy and durable your bifold doors will be over time. The most common gauges used for residential use are 24-gauge and 28-gauge steel frames. 24-gauge steel frames are thicker and more durable while 28-gauge steel frames are thinner and lighter weight but still provide ample strength and durability for residential application

Standard vs Custom Sizes

Bifold doors come in both standard sizes as well as custom sizes depending on what best fits with your needs and budget. Standard sizes range from 24” wide x 80” tall up to 48” wide x 96” tall; however, if these don't fit in with your space then custom sizes are available as well though they typically cost more than standard-sized doors due to additional labour costs associated with creating them. Additionally, some manufacturers may offer pre-hung units which include all necessary hardware for installation so be sure to check out our selection when shopping for bi-folds!
